Why you need to try SUP yoga

Our top 5 reasons you need to Try SUP yoga this year

SUP yoga in Victoria BC

We love stand up paddle boarding, we love yoga so it only makes sense that we would love SUP yoga too. Do you like Paddle boarding? Do you like Yoga? Do you like trying new things? If you answered yes to at least one of those questions you have got to try SUP yoga this year.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. SUP Yoga challenges you

Yoga is a great way to improve balance, both physically and mentally. When you take yoga to the water it becomes a lot more difficult. Not only do you need to rely on body awareness but you need to be able to hold your poses and trust your balance while on a moving platform. This can be a challenge, but an exciting and a rewarding one – and one we think you should try.

The benefits? Just wait until you see your core muscles after a few SUP yoga sessions!

  1. SUP yoga helps you overcome fears

Falling in the water is not so bad, I mean we all swim in it and for the most part, we have all been in the water at some point in our lives. Sure it can be cold and when it is unplanned it can be a bit uncomfortable but for the most part, it is fun and enjoyable. The biggest fear of SUP yoga is falling in the water, which we have just established is not that scary. Yet, when you are out there trying to focus on your downward dog pose wobbling back and forth can seem terrifying. Terrifyingly fun that is!

  1. You will make new friends

Think of some of your best friendships. Chances are you have seen the best, but also the worst of these people. You have been through some stuff with them. They have seen you at your worst and are still there. We have all learned that the strongest bonds come from a place of accepting each other, the good the bad and the ugly. When you watch someone fall out of their warrior one into the ocean sputtering salt water and clambering back on board to continue their yoga practice you get to see the best and the worst all at once. Similarly, when you are the one to tip sideways into the sea and come back up to the reassuring smiles of your fellow classmates you will feel a deep sense of acceptance and love. The friendships forged with these people are strong, almost as strong as your core muscles are going to be after class.

  1. Yoga and nature are like Yin and Yang

Yoga is all about being in the moment and really focusing on your practice. It can be difficult to cut out the stresses of daily life even in the most relaxing of yoga classrooms. We guarantee that when your yoga studio becomes a breathtaking backdrop of ocean air and marine wildlife you won’t have enough room in your mind for anything other than the present moment. Try thinking about that due date at work or school when you are face up in corpse pose focusing on your breath as the waves gently rock you back and forth and the shadow of a seagull dulls the sunshine on your face for a split second. You’ll be out there on the water asking yourself what day it is after an hour.

  1. SUP Yoga is a two for one

Want to try Stand up Paddle boarding? Want to try yoga? Love multi-use things? We do too. The great thing about SUP yoga is that it is a two-in-one activity! You get all the fun of SUP and yoga in one great evening activity.

Are you ready to get out there into the dolphin pose on the Victoria Harbour for some SUP Yoga this year?
