Located in Victoria, British Columbia on beautiful Vancouver Island, Ocean River is one of the premier speciality kayak and adventure companies in North America. Brian Henry, the founder & current owner, has been running Ocean River since 1981, and Ocean River continues to be recognised as one of the most significant outdoor/paddlesports instructional & tours provider in North America.
Gordon moved with his family in 2018 from the Isle of Skye, Scotland to Vancouver Island. In Scotland, he ran the very successful Skyak Adventures with his wife, Morag. He has a lifetime’s experience of kayaking in all its forms and well over thirty years coaching sea kayaking at the highest level. In 2016 he completed a Masters degree (Stirling University) in Performance Coaching with a focus on decision making in order to avoid incidents. Gordon holds the British Canoe Union Level 5 Coach in both sea and whitewater kayak and also Level 3 Coach in surf kayak. He can train and assess British Canoeing sea kayak three star, leader and advanced leader awards (4star and five star) surf and whitewater 3 star as well as coaching awards. Additionally, he has certifications with ACA and Paddle Canada. He is often to be found as a guest coach at symposia around the world. Gordon is also an author (Sea Kayak, Pesda Press 2006; Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue, Pesda Press 2019 and the chapter in the BCU handbook on sea kayaking) and has produced award winning DVDs (Sea Kayak with Gordon Brown) and videos (Over… and Out) since 1991, focusing mainly on safety.
He loves live folk music and enjoys singing Scottish songs, good food and friends.
Gordon believes that everyone has the potential to achieve more and that a creative and supportive environment can lay the foundations for the greatest advances in personal development. He values the importance of taking time to reflect and learn from the experience. His most rewarding experiences are when helping someone else achieve their potential.
Gordon has devoted his life to being the best that he can be, whether as a master motor mechanic, a rally driver or as a kayak coach. He has always pushed the boundaries of performance for himself as well as others and does not accept that ‘things are done that way’ just because they’ve been done that way for ever. He has always challenged others in their thoughts and beliefs about the sport of kayaking and has been at the leading edge of sea kayak coaching for almost thirty years.
