How to properly care for Blundstone boots

Blundstone boots, whether they are smooth leather or nubuck(suede), are very easy to care for.  With a little TLC they will last for many adventures!

Care for Blundstones

Smooth leather care

The majority of Blundstone boots are made from a Greasy Kip Leather. This leather is treated at the factory to be as water-repellent as leather can be, without losing breathability.

The boots are ready to wear the moment you buy them.

To maintain the leather and the water-repellency of the boots clean them as necessary, and every couple of months treat them with a natural leather conditioner. Blundstone makes an Oily + Waxy Conditioner, that is great for a quick and easy cleanup. It’s a pre-saturated sponge that will spruce up your boots in seconds helping you to look like a functioning adult winning at life.

Polishing your Blundstones will also help keep the leather supple and from drying out.  Blundstone makes their own boot polish in the black and brown colour. Polishing your boots can be done as needed or monthly.  A Few times a year, after cleaning your Blundstones, you should also re-waterproof them.  Nikwax makes a product call waterproofing wax for smooth leather.  This product is one of our favourite ones because it is water based and you can use your fingers to rub the wax into all the nooks and crannies! If you want to keep your hands dry though there is a spray option from Nikwax, called Fabric & Leather Proof, which will also work wonders.

Nubuck leather care

You have to treat nubuck Blundstones a little differently so that you don’t discolour them or ruin the look of the shoe and its suede texture.

Cleaning nubuck is also easy with a product from Nikwax called footwear cleaning gel.  This cleaner is easy to apply with its sponge applicator and you just sponge it onto damp boots and rinse off.

Got scuffs??  No problem, use a gum eraser on the scuff and wipe away the rubber debris.  Re-waterproof the shoe with Nikwax nubuck & suede proof waterproofing.  Again, this product is water based and you can use your fingers to rub in the creases and folds of the shoe!

Washing and drying

You can use the Cleaning gel from Nikwax on both nubuck and original smooth leather looking Blundstones but another option is a simple water and vinegar solution. It is the treatments after cleaning where the treatment differs based on the fabric. For any Blundstones be sure to air dry at room temperature and never near a heat source.

Blundstone boots require a little bit of care and maintenance to keep them performing for years and years. The frequency depends on what you are doing, and what conditions you are wearing them in. but if you take care of your Blundstone boots and they will take care of you.

Is there any recommended polish for scrape due to a fall??

  2. Loren Cohen says:

I used the oily wax sponge, can I also use the renovating cream in the same cleaning period?

    • Jamie Dawson says:

Hi there, great question! The sponge is designed for quick clean-ups in between your renovating cream applications. A kind of “headed out the door” polish as opposed to spending 15 minutes on the renovating cream and having to leave them to dry. Hope this helps!

Do NOT lounge by the fire as shown in the photo above. The soles WILL melt.
